Tips for Using Your Heat Pump in Okeechobee, FL, More Efficiently
Heat pumps can provide efficient heating and cooling, but how you use them may make that efficiency vanish. If you own a heat pump, follow these four tips to maximize efficiency, enhance comfort and save money.
Set the Thermostat to a Consistent Temperature
Heat pumps operate most efficiently when maintaining a set temperature rather than trying to make drastic changes. In fact, adjusting your thermostat more than a degree or two may cause the inefficient auxiliary heating to run. Once you find a comfortable temperature, leave it set there for the entire season.
Don’t Use Auto Mode
Auto mode allows the heat pump to automatically switch between heating and cooling modes. Unfortunately, this often makes the system kick into the improper setting, decreasing its efficiency. Rather than using Auto, set it either to Heat or Cool.
Change or Clean the Air Filter
Your heat pump needs to have a clean air filter to work well. For centrally handled heat pumps, you need to replace the filter every 30 to 90 days for thinner models. For mini-spit systems, the air filter needs cleaning about every two weeks. If you don’t know how to do it, we can assistant you with filter cleaning or changing.
Schedule Heat Pump Maintenance
No matter what kind of heat pump you have, it’ll need routine maintenance to continue working well. Industry professionals typically recommend maintenance every spring and fall. During this visit, a senior service technician will:
- Clean the circulating fan wheel.
- Clean the inside and outside coils.
- Test the system.
- Tighten mounting hardware.
- Tighten electrical connections.
- Check the refrigerant charge.
Following these four tips can help reduce the wear on your system and lower your energy consumption. Call to schedule your routine heat pump maintenance visit with one of the NATE-certified senior service technicians at Miller’s Central Air, Inc.
